Archival historyMembership of the Royal Medico-Psychological Association (RMPA) had been open to any medically qualified person subject to election and payment of a subscription, whereas full membership of the existing medical Royal Colleges was in general acquired on the basis of a qualifying examination. In the discussions leading up to the foundation of the College, it had been agreed that any psychiatrist of consultant or equivalent status would be entitled to to Foundation Membership and those who had over 12 years of service as a consultant would be eligable for Foundation Fellowship. There were still a large number of psychiatrists who had both taken a DPM examination and had een members of the RMPA. These would automatically become Affiliates of the College but were still subject to the entry examination.
